Project: Free the Buns
The funds will be used to get new software and instruments, complete the orchestration, and for promotion.
As a musician I’m greatly inspired by: Stevie Wonder, Sting, Tracy Chapman, Herbie Hancock, Alice Coltrane, Stromae, Jimi Hendrix, Quincy Jones, Jorge Ben Jor, Angélique Kidjo, Fleetwood Mac, Babyface, Grace Jones, Bob Marley, Bobby Caldwell, Fela Kuti, JMSN, Outkast, George Michael, Missy Elliott and Danny Elfman, among many others.
While composing the score for “Free the Buns,” my aim was to capture the joyful essense of mid-naughts coming-of-age films. I wanted to create something that spoke to the myriad of heightened emotions these characters experience, so tonally it’s varied and genre bending. The original song ‘Came to Collect,’ featured in the film is a fun, rebellious, piece that serves as a catharsis for the characters, following their mistreatment. Overall, it speaks to the reclamation of one’s power in the face of injustice. That song was inspired by Outkast’s ‘B.o.B,’ which is such a powerful record, and one of my favorite’s by them. This score is energetic, suspenseful, whimsical and hopeful. I was inspired by the tone of “Black Mirror” and coming-of-age films like “16 Candles,” and “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.”
