New Music USA is committed to making all its grant programs equitable, by removing barriers in the application process and by elevating all artists and organizations who receive our support. The main criteria for this fund were: artistry, impact, need, and equity and inclusion. In addition, applicants were asked to submit a statement of endorsement from an artist or member of their community to highlight the impact of their work.
The peer review process for New Music USA’s Organization Fund applications reflects ongoing efforts to dismantle bias. For this round, New Music USA engaged 31 artists, composers, musicians, and administrators from locations around the country to build an independent review panel with 67% of people identifying as women and nonbinary, and 53% of people identifying as BIPOC.
Scott Winship, Director of Grantmaking Programs at New Music USA, says,
“We are proud to support 85 organizations across the US through our Organization Fund this year. It’s an honor to witness the impactful work of organizations across the musical spectrum, and we are deeply inspired by the work of all the awardees and applicants. The quality of this year’s applicants was extraordinarily high, and we regret that we were not able to support more of the incredible organizations that applied.”
Erin Roy, Executive Director of New York-based awardee David Dorfman Dance, shares:
“We are a dance company dedicated to original and live music, however as the costs of touring increase exponentially, this is a budget item that has been threatened. Our grant from New Music USA will go far in supporting the composing costs of our newest project and allow us to move forward confidently into the next one with continued commitment to supporting our musicians as they both compose and tour across the US. Thank you!”
Austin, TX-based awardee Conspirare adds:
“Conspirare believes in the power and integrity of new music in the vast choral repertoire and is committed to the broad exploration of new expressions, styles, and presentations. New Music USA’s grant will support a commission for choir and instruments from transcultural composer Derrick Skye – our second collaboration with him! This is an important opportunity to add an extended length choral work to the repertoire.”
