- Can I apply if I am transgender?
Yes. We are using “Non-binary” as an umbrella term for gender identities that are neither male nor female—identities that are outside the gender binary.
- What ages can apply?
Applicants who fall in the age range of 21-35 are welcome to apply.
- Can I apply if I am not vaccinated?
To create the safest environment possible for our program participants and to comply with the regulations of many live venues, we require everyone participating to be fully vaccinated by the start of this program. We will also expect all participants to comply with any regular testing protocols.
- Can I apply if I am a vocalist?
Yes if you are an improviser. Any improviser in jazz that meets the eligibility and criteria can apply to the program.
- Can I apply if my instrument is not commonly used in jazz (i.e. Puerto Rican cuatro)?
Yes. Any improviser in jazz that meets the eligibility and criteria can apply to the program.
- I have only practiced my instrument for less than 5 years and have never received formal education. Can I apply to the program?
Formal education is not a requirement. However, at this time the program is designed for artists who are seeking to exploit their potential, thus have worked on their craft for a significant amount of time. If you believe you are at the right stage of your career for this program, please demonstrate why in your application.
- I am self-taught, have never had a and lack music theory knowledge? I have never had private lessons. Can I apply to the program?

- Are any New Music USA staff involved in the selection process?
No. There is a selection panel of artists, educators and other professionals in the industry that were carefully chosen to review your applications. The panel will include Next Jazz Legacy’s Artistic Director, Terri Lyne Carrington.
