Are there gender eligibility requirements for this program?
Next Jazz Legacy seeks to expand opportunities for diverse improvisers who have been historically underrepresented in the field. We welcome applications from emerging artists of all gender and sexual identities to achieve the goal of true gender diversity in jazz.

What are the age requirements?
Artists who are between the ages of 21-35 at the time of application are welcome to apply.

Can I apply if I am a vocalist?
Yes, if you are an improviser. Any improviser in jazz that meets the eligibility criteria can apply to the program.

Can I apply if my instrument is not commonly used in jazz (i.e. Puerto Rican cuatro)?
Yes. Any improviser in jazz that meets the eligibility criteria can apply to the program. All instruments are welcome.

I have only practiced my instrument for less than 5 years and have never received formal education. Can I apply to the program?
Formal education is not a requirement. However, the program is designed for emerging professional artists, who typically have been honing their craft for a significant amount of time. If you believe you are at the right stage of your career for this program, please demonstrate why in your application.

I am self-taught, lack music theory knowledge, and have never had private lessons. Can I apply to the program?
The program is designed for emerging professional artists, who are not typically self-taught. If you have not had such training and you believe you are at the right stage of your career for this program, you are welcome to apply.

Are any New Music USA staff involved in the selection process?
Awardees are selected by a panel of artists, educators and other professionals in the industry that were carefully chosen to review the applications. The panel includes Next Jazz Legacy’s Artistic Director, Terri Lyne Carrington. New Music USA’s staff review applications for eligibility.
