New Chamber Ballet presents the world premiere of “Well,” a full-length ballet choreographed by Miro Magloire to music by Anthony Cheung.

Ever a champion of new music, Magloire has found in Cheung’s music “a perpetually renewing rhythmic imagination, with scintillating harmonies that evoke the reflection of light in water “. The new work interweaves a passionate solo with an intricate group piece – with the dancers permanently switching roles in Magloire’s delicate choreography.

The title “Well” also refers to the people who come to nourish themselves: dance and music springing forth to feed our sense of humanity.

“Well” will be performed in New Chamber Ballet’s signature, in-the-round setup, with the audience seated up-close and able to see the kaleidoscopic choreography from various angles. As always at New Chamber Ballet, the music will be performed live.

“This is actually the first time my music is being choreographed,” says composer Anthony Cheung, “with pieces for violin and piano (in solo and duo formations) that are quite different from one another. Some have alternately explosive and tender extreme contrasts while others continually evolve through gradual accumulations and transformations of patterns. I eagerly await the opportunity to experience Miro Magloire’s new perspectives on these works with the talented dancers and musicians of New Chamber Ballet.”

Performers include the dancers Anabel Alpert, Megan Foley, Nicole McGinnis, Amber Neff, and Rachele Perla; as well as Doori Na (violin) and Nacho Ojeda (piano).

“It’s heartening to see work so focused on the meeting of dance and music.” -Alastair Macaulay, The New York Times
