La Sonnambula Piano-Vocal-ASL Workshop

Opera Praktikos (OPrak) is developing an ambitious reworking of Bellini & Romani’s classic bel canto opera La Sonnambula – sung in the original Italian – ASL integrated into the story and the score.

Spicer Carr arranges an abridgement of Bellinio’s score for chamber orchestra in collaboration with Brandon Kazen-Maddox who integrates ASL into Romani’s libretto.

Working with an interabled team, we view Romani’s story from a disability perspective, building a deeply familiar yet wholly new work. Our 90-minute abridgement asks universal questions of belonging and examines the complex relationships people with disabilities have with one other as well as the one they have with the community at large.

A free workshop presentation of select scenes from the work-in-progress will be held June 18 at 3pm – Balance Arts Studio 151 West 30th St 2nd Floor.
