Either/Or perform Richard Carrick’s The Path (NY Premiere)
Either/OR presents the NY Premiere of ED Richard Carrick’s The Path in Mise-En_Place in Harlem, NYC. The Path is the third of Carrick’s concert length quintets including The Atlas (2023), and l’Algérie (2024), both of which Either/Or has premiered and commercially released (New Focus Recordings 2025, 2026). All three quintets have a thorough line of influence of the music of the Maghreb, with The Path also expanding to 70’s fusion/jazz.
The Path references the opening of Dante’s Inferno, “I lost the path that does not stray,” and the individual movements further reference Dante’s journey in various forms, including The Forrest, Illumination, Abyss, and Shifting Memories. The Path is scored for piano, tres cubano, violin, cello and drums. Originally conceived as a set of lead sheets for violin and piano, the unique instrumentation led to writing out arranged and structured compositions for the longer movements, placing this piece between the different worlds of lead sheets and notated compositions.
With longtime collaborators Jennifer Choi and Justin Jay Hines, alongside new members Jeremy Harman and Mario Salvador, Either/Or will bring its acclaimed ensemble creativity to new heights in Harlem on May 14 with this evocative premiere.
