CRS Presents Paradise Laboratory: Meg Brennan (woodwinds) & Hannah Marks (bass)

CRS (Center for Remembering & Sharing) invites you to the next installment of its Paradise Laboratory concert series, featuring improvisation by Meg Brennan (flute/saxophone) and Hannah Marks (bass). The concerts will take place Sunday, October 1, 2023 at 5 pm in the award-winning White Room at CRS. PARADISE LABORATORY is a playground for sonic and visual experimentation. Conceived of during the pandemic by the renowned Korean traditional multi-instrumentalist, curator, and scholar gamin, Paradise Laboratory provides musical artists with opportunities to rehearse, record, film, and perform with other musical, visual, and/or dance artists in an experimental, process-oriented, and artist-centered fashion. NEAREST SUBWAY STATIONS: 4/5/6, N/R/Q, L trains to 14th St / Union Square ABOUT THE ARTISTS Meg Brennan is a multi-woodwindist, composer, arranger, educator, and bandleader, widely regarded for her versatility across musical genres. As a flutist and saxophonist, she has performed with esteemed musicians such as Keyon Harrold, Rodney Whitaker, Ingrid Jensen, Andrew Bishop, and Ellen Rowe. An international performer, she was selected to represent the University of Michigan at the International Association of Schools of Jazz in Munich, Germany in 2021. As bandleader of the Meg Brennan Quartet, her accomplishment is marked by performances at notable venues such as the Lansing Jazz Festival, Blue Llama Jazz Club, Cliff Bells, and features on 90.9 WRCJ Detroit and 89.7 WLNZ Lansing. Other notable venues that she has performed at includes the Detroit Jazz Festival, Blue Llama Jazz Club, Cliff Bells, Aretha’s Jazz Cafe, and the Fox Theater. Currently, she performs with the prize-winning BETA Quartet, with whom she won First Prize at the France Music Competition 2° and advanced to quarter finalists in the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition (2020). Meg completed her Bachelors in Music in Jazz Saxophone and Flute Performance from Michigan State University and Masters in Music in Jazz and Contemporary Improvisation from the University of Michigan. Marks’ debut album, Outsider, Outlier, is an explosive rendering of her search for belonging and empowerment. A nod to her love for punk, noise and free improvisation, Outsider, Outlier releases on Out Of Your Head Records on October 20, 2023. She has performed at festivals like the Detroit Jazz Festival, Hyde Park Jazz Festival, 80-35 Music Festival, Iowa City Jazz Festival and Indy Jazz Festival. In addition to her experimental rock project Outsider, Outlier, Marks also leads a jazz group, Hannah Marks Quartet. As a side-woman, Marks has been described as having “a fresh, modern, and original approach to playing the bass” by Marcus Printup. Marks has played bass for Geoffrey Keezer, Nasheet Waits, Terri Lyne Carrington, Anna Webber, Miles Okazaki, Ingrid Jensen, Kalia Vandever, Matt Wilson, Ted Nash, Morgan Guerin and Marcus Printup.
