Alex Coke & Carl Michel Sextet at Soundspace

The Alex Coke & Carl Michel Sextet is a collaborative composer’s forum featuring musicians Alex Coke (woodwinds), Carl Michel (guitar), Elaine Barber (concert harp), Bob Hoffnar (pedal steel), Dana Wygmans (bass), and Carolyn Trowbridge (vibes). Based in Austin, TX., the sextet explores the boundaries of jazz, classical, new music, folk, improvisation and extended technique. Their first two recordings released on PlayOn Records, The Emissary (2021) Emergence (2023) feature compositions by John Coltrane, Paul Motian, Hildegard von Bingen, Huddie Ledbetter, Ukrainian composer Valentin Silvestrov and original compositions by members of the sextet.
Their third album, Situation (2025), continues their sonic exploration with arrangements of compositions by Carla Bley, Thelonious Monk, Wayne Shorter, Camille Saint-Saëns, Ottorino Respighi plus original compositions by group members Alex Coke, Carl Michel & Bob Hoffnar.
